Welcome To The Interstices
The cracks. The pores. The silence between words. The invisible realms between electron and nucleus, between signal and response, between one breath and the next. That space, so often ignored, so easily dismissed, is the true seat of reality. And if you're in business, culture, or technology, youâd be a fool not to pay attention. Hello, weâre Alice and we are always in a state of wander. Letâs put it bluntly: the future isnât solid. Itâs porous, volatile, emergent. And itâs in the interstices, those ghostly seams between the measurable and the mysterious that the most important transformations are occurring.
Weâre living in a liminal age, a transitional, shape-shifting epoch where our systems (economic, social, ecological, neurological) are mutating in real-time. If you're not aware of the interstitial dynamics, the feedback loops, the delays, the whispers of the void, youâre missing the operating system beneath the user interface of civilization.
âLife lurks in the interstices of each living cell,
and in the interstices of the brain.â
â Alfred North Whitehead
In business speak? The action isn't in the product. It's in the relationship. Not in the data point, but in the pattern between. Not in the brand, but the resonance it stirs in the unconscious thresholds of attention. And that⌠that is what makes interstices not just poetic, but strategic.
The Interstices as Innovation Terrain
Letâs look at climate chaos, AI hegemony, quantum economies, these are unfolding in the murky, shifting liminal spaces between disciplines, ideologies, and biomes. Now add in techno-cynicism: weâre building interstitial machines, code that swims in quantum latency, platforms that manipulate human precognition. Waiting rooms that literally pulse with data. And finish this scenario with bringing in the interstice, the chrysalis of human potential. It is these in-between zones that births the new.
Business Applications (or: How To Profit From Nothing)
1. White Space Strategy
The smartest brands are no longer filling gaps; theyâre designing them, curating anticipation, ambiguity, and pause. Think Appleâs minimalist UX. Or Salone del Mobileâs womb-like waiting rooms (see below). We monetize attention by designing the void.
2. Resonant Culture
In the interstices between identities, new communities are forming. Transhuman, post-capital, meta-indigenous. Culture isn't linear; it's woven. What was once fringe is now frontier.
3. Interstitial Neurodesign
Design not for users, but for moments of intermission: the waiting, the loading, the stillness. Optimize emotional latency. Engage the liminal nervous system. Ask: how does your product feel in the pause?
4. Liminal Leadership
The next leaders are not visionaries with certainties. They are sacred cartographers of ambiguity. They thrive in the unformed. They can listen to what isnât being said.
A New Operating Philosophy
We're not âbuilding the future.â Weâre inhabiting the interstice between now and next. That means letting go of our addiction to resolution. Living in questions. Getting intimate with incompletion. In an age of AI hallucinations, climate disintegration, and societal decoherence, only those fluent in the language of the interstice will endure.
The interstice is not a gap, itâs the generative threshold where the embodied human comes alive. In this liminal space between systems, roles, and identities, we are no longer defined by what we do, but by what we sense. Here, outside the confines of optimization and performance, we remember ourselves as fluid, feeling beings, capable of coherence, connection, and emergence. The interstice is the portal to potential because it is uncolonized, still wild enough for truth to echo, and soft enough for wholeness to root.
Closing Incantation
The interstice is the door. Not a void, but a portal. Not emptiness,
but energetic potential.
âIn the universe, there are things that are known,
and things that are unknown,
and in between,
there are doors.â
â William Blake

đ§ Interstices of Things Ajar: Mark Goldthorpe explores intersticesâthose liminal gaps where meaning, memory, and movement resideâthrough the mythic and cognitive worlds of ravens, whose flight becomes a metaphor for temporal perception. From Norse myth to cognitive science, and from Robert Frost to Bachelard, these in-between spaces hold a haunting intelligence: memory as future, architecture as intimacy, and birds as omens circling above our Anthropocene disorientation. In these cracks of continuity, culture might glimpse a way forwardânot by monument, but by metaphor. (via Climate Cultures)
đ Impermanent Substrates: Restorative Infiltrations in the Interstice reimagines infrastructure-impacted landscapesâsuch as Colombiaâs Ituango Hydroelectric zoneâas regenerative systems. Embracing impermanence and adaptability, the project introduces modular, floating, and flexible structures that respond to ecological rhythms and community needs. Through co-designed interventions like adaptive crop systems, water mobility devices, and habitat restoration strategies, the design transforms hard infrastructure into living, performative landscapesâwhere architecture becomes a catalyst for healing, biodiversity, and social resilience. (via World Architecture)
â In the Interstices of Our Palms brings together three artists whose works explore fragile materials and embodied practices to examine how communities survive and adapt in the wake of disruption. Through gestures of vulnerability and resilience, the exhibition reflects on the possibilities of healing, renewal, and collective restoration. (via Mutual Art)
𩺠Paolo Sorrentinoâs La dolce attesa at Salone del Mobile 2025 transforms the medical waiting room into a hypnotic, emotionally charged space of suspended time and introspection. With blood-red walls, a beating heart soundscape, and haunting minimalism, the installation reimagines waiting not as void, but as a potent threshold of transformation. (via Stir World)
đ§ Epiphanies of the Interstice is a multisensory exhibition by Mika Ninagawa and the collective EiM at Palazzo Bollani during the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025, exploring liminal spaces between identity, memory, and perception. Through immersive installations of shimmering light, ephemeral materials, and spectral imagery, the artists transform sacred and funerary motifs into vibrant zones of exchange, where the visible and invisible, natural and artificial, poetic and political, continuously merge and dissolve. Love the way this chimes with my mindset; I could never follow, I had to find my own doors.
