The future didnât arrive with trumpets. It showed up like municipal plumbing: quietly essential, deeply political, and impossible to ignore once it breaks. Welcome to Solarpunk Pragmatism, the version of tomorrow that doesnât cosplay utopia and doesnât fetishize collapse either. This is not a mood board. Itâs a maintenance manual. Hello, weâre Alice and we are always in a state of wander.
In this frame, cities donât conquer natureâthey metabolize with it.
Buildings photosynthesize. Infrastructure behaves more like mycelium than monuments. Power is pulled locally from sun, wind, tide, and habit. Rooftops are productive. Streets are edible. Energy grids donât rule; they negotiate. This isnât optimism as decoration. Itâs optimism as labor. Solarpunk, at its most honest, rejects the mainstream script that insists weâve already lost. No doomed futures, no nihilist chic. Instead: iteration, repair, and radical competence. There is no single future waiting to be unlocked, only branching paths shaped by people willing to prototype reality instead of doomscrolling it.
Which brings us to naming things.
Why bother? The label doesnât matter. The intent does.
Kim Stanley Robinson, professional time traveler, utopian troublemaker, and patron saint of stubborn hope, has already done the rant so none of us have to. In his gloriously cantankerous interview for Solarpunk Magazine, he reminds us that science fiction has always been a dangerous idea precisely because it refuses to separate facts from values.
Science makes the world; fiction decides what it means. That fusion makes people nervous. Good.
He mocks the endless suffixes, the branding exercises, the way every movement gets flattened into a marketing term. And then, beautifully, inevitably, he shrugs and blesses them anyway. Call it science fiction. Call it utopia. Call it solarpunk or hopepunk or whatever punk youâve duct-taped together. Again, labels are just words. Itâs the intent that matters.
If youâre writing against dystopia, youâre already doing the work.
That tension between naming and doing
is the heartbeat of solarpunk pragmatism.
Less manifesto, more field report.
So hereâs the situational awareness dump:
Biotopian Surge
Biodesign has crossed the line from speculative to strategic. Biofactories are industrial policy now. Cells are executable code. Expect green swans, not silver bullets. The Speculative Present
Dystopia fatigue is real. Solarpunk isnât about escaping the future; itâs about engineering the present with myth-level imagination and systems-grade rigor. The Syntropocene
The Anthropocene named the damage. The Syntropocene names the repair. Coherence over extraction. Humanity acting like a species that finally read the manual.Breathe Deep
Carbon isnât the villain; itâs a feedstock with a PR problem. CCS, utilization, and circular carbon economies are scaling. The planet may yet catch its breath.Farming OS
Agriculture is becoming software. AI-guided cultivation, photosynthetic intelligence, vertical and horizontal systems talking to each other in real time. Dirt meets data.Biomimicry, Finally
Twenty years ago, Janine Benyus asked why we werenât making materials the way algae do. Turns out the answer was: âwait for the tooling.â The tooling has arrived.Thriving With Microbes
Fermentation is infrastructure. Every molecule imaginable, grown instead of mined. Natureâs source code is going open-source, whether weâre ready or not.
Biodesigners
Gen Z skipped the slide decks and went straight to the lab. CRISPR over PowerPoint.
This isnât educationâitâs rehearsal. None of this is clean. None of it is guaranteed. Thatâs the point. Solarpunk Pragmatism doesnât promise salvation. It offers participation. A future built the same way all durable systems are built: locally, iteratively, and with a clear-eyed refusal to surrender imagination to despair.
Or, to put it bluntly:
The world has already become science fiction.
The only open question is what have we become?
What else weâre wanderingâŚ
Right about now, you might be asking: âWhere are the punk rock, zine-making, open-source, people. Not brands. Not platforms. Living structures for creative work in service to life.
Welcome to (m)otherboard: Imagine building technology in service to life. Radical, they know. They are rooted in history, awake to the present, and audacious about what comes next. Theyâre here to bend the arc of technology away from extractive convenience and toward collective flourishing, soil-forward, community-powered, future-loving. If youâve been waiting for your people, the ones who refuse resignation, who build instead of beg, who believe art is infrastructureâthey are right here.
A CORP: For centuries, artists have labored at the edges, shaping culture, generating value, seeding futures, while institutions extracted the upside and left creators with scraps. Weâre done with that model. Artist Corporations are a new path: legal, cultural, and economic containers designed by artists, for artists, with the future in mind. They blend mutualism with governance, creativity with stewardship, imagination with accountability. And thereâre building together.
Video Rituals for Exquisite Emotional Exploration: Innerorbital Psychostructures Corp. creates interactive video rituals designed to explore emotional depth with beauty and precision. Through responsive, responsible interactivity, these experiences cultivate emotional literacy and invite meaning to emerge organically and with clarity. From The Oooooze School, a re-architecture of the heart nurturing symbiotic subcultures, to the development of co-creative tools for abundance economies, this is an evolving ecosystem of inner and collective transformation. This work draws on research and practice across emotional sciences, ancient knowledge systems, pop culture history, and iterative design. They create video rituals from The Oooooze Schoolâs advanced video ritual frameworks and Oooooze software engine. The Oooooze School offers a new and comprehensive set of ethical design patterns and metrics for co-creativity, strength and compassion.
Solar meets quantum, everywhereâŚ
In labs. In forests. In design studios. In schools. In neighborhoods. In code. In breath circles. In community repair workshops. In regenerative farms. In open-source biolabs. It refuses linear futures and disembodied truths. It rejects the lie that intelligence can exist without bodies. It tunes the field. It is not a movement. It is an attractor state. The system cannot measure it because coherence is not extractable. And that is protection. It is not a meme. It is an elegant idea.
Ideas are not memes. Ideas are coherent patterns of information organized for action. They shape behavior. They build forms. They move matter. An idea is embodied. It carries intention. A meme, as originally framed, is different. A unit competing for survival. Replicating. Mutating. Spreading. As if thought were a virus with no author. But ideas donât appear from nowhere. They are generated. Composed. Chosen.
The meme model strips away the source. It treats meaning like pollen in the wind, floating, self-interested, automatic. If it spreads, it wins. If it doesnât, it dies. Clean. Mechanical. Darwinian. And deeply evasive. Because when ideas are treated as autonomous replicators, no one is accountable. History becomes a swarm of self-propagating fragments. Cognition becomes chemistry. Culture becomes accident. But thinking is not mechanical. It is participatory. Relational. Ethical. To hold an idea is to be responsible for it. To transmit it is to shape a world. Ideas are not competing organisms. They are commitments. They require stewardship. They demand cooperation. They implicate their authors.
Reduce thought to memes and you remove agency. You erase participation. You anesthetize responsibility. And once responsibility disappears, everything feels automatic. But it isnât. We are not hosts for viral abstractions. We are designers of meaning. And what we think is something we answer for.
The world starts with maybe.
The future does not manifest unless we ask it a question. Vision is inquiry. Place is responsibility. When we shape our story, we shape our physiology. We shape our participation. We shape the field around us. Coherence is not abstraction. It is the disciplined act of becoming a story we can inhabit, and a future we are willing to help construct. LETâS REWILD OUR IMAGINATION.
